Where to use it

The Auro Hard Wax 171 is a hard wearing, dirt-repellent, solvent-free wax made of beeswax and vegetable wax for use on wooden furniture and floors, linoleum, cork and unglazed clay tiles. It is a hard wax that is polished in a soft state to create a Satin – Matt shine with a beautiful honey colour. It is available in a 400g and 2.5kg tin.

What it does

The Hard Wax when applied leaves a hard-wearing, thin film over the surface which protects it against dirt and spills. The wax allows the surface to breathe allowing moisture to escape if necessary.

Why we love it

The coverage on the wax is phenomenal (100sq/m per kg) this makes it very economical. It is easy to apply particularly if you or your installer has a polishing machine for large areas. It is hard wearing and can provide additional protection to an already oiled AURO Floor which will leave you with a long-lasting protected surface.

The wax is certified as safe for toys therefore suited for use on cots, children’s toys, and nursery furniture.

All ingredients used are compostable

How it works

Whereas an oil will protect the surface from the inside, the Auro Hard Wax 171 protects the surface by providing a slight film on top of the surface while still allowing it to breathe. The wax will be applied in a soft state and will only become hard after polishing.

How to Install

New or bare wood/wood-based materials:

High quality surfaces should be first washed down with a sponge and allowed to dry, sand using very fine sandpaper in the direction of the grain and then all dust must be removed.

If the surface is absorbent it should be primed with Auro Special Primer 117, or Auro Hard Oil 126. For a solvent free coating system, the Auro Pursolid Hard Oil 123 should be used. 1 or 2 coats of these should be added depending on the absorption and any excess should be removed.

The Auro Hard Wax 171 should then be applied and polished within 1 – 2 hours. Once the drying time has elapsed the surface can no longer be polished. Generally, a beige or white pad are used for a polishing machine. It can also be applied by using a cloth rolled into a ball or a hot spray gun.

When treating Unglazed Clay Tiles, natural stone tiles, linoleum or cork it is important to remove any dirt by using the Auro Floor Cleaner 427. Priming can be done the same as mentioned above (Not for linoleum – wax is applied directly on this). As always, it is important to do a preliminary test to ensure compatibility and colour shading so you are happy with the result before undertaking a large job.

On previously painted surfaces the old coating should be removed using Auro Stripping paste 461 or by sanding. The surface should be neutralized, cleaned, sanded and free from dust before the new application process is started.

Generally, if a surface that was previously waxed needs to be renovated it is best to strip it back by removing the layer of wax before applying a new layer of wax. In some cases, it can be possible to treat just a small area, but it can be difficult to blend in the old and new.

Do not wet the floor too much, a damp cloth is best for washing. Regular cleaning with Auro Floor Care Emulsion 431 or Auro Floor Care 437 will prolong the life of the surface. For a deep clean use the Auro Power Cleaner 421.

The surface is able for minor stress after 24 hours. Treat the Floor gently and prevent contact with liquids for the first 4 weeks after this time the surface will be fully washable.

Tools can be cleaned with Auro Orange Oil 191.
